Delhi Mayor Elections
New Delhi: Election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Delhi Municipal Corporation is going on. 250 councilors, seven Lok Sabha, and three Rajya Sabha MPs are participating in this election. While the mayoral election was scheduled to be held on January 6, the mayoral election was postponed due to an argument between AAP and BJP councilors. This meeting is being held today.
This time the post of mayor will be in the rotation system. The five-year tenure was reserved for women in the first year, an open category in the second, the reserved category in the third, and the remaining two reserved for the open category. Delhi will have a woman mayor this year. However, Delhi will have a woman mayor after almost 10 years.
The Delhi municipal elections were held on December 4 and the counting of votes was completed on December 7. AAP won in 134 wards and BJP in 104 wards while members contested in 250 seats. While Shelly Oberoi is contesting on behalf of AAP for the post of mayor, Rekha Gupta is contesting as the BJP candidate. Ashu Thakur is contesting as AAP's backup candidate.
Ale Muhammad Iqbal and Jalaj Kumar from AAP and Kamal Bargi from BJP have entered the fray for the post of Deputy Mayor. After fifteen years, the BJP faced defeat in the Delhi municipal elections. Satya Sharma will be the speaker for this meeting. Lt Governor VK Saxena appointed her as Acting Speaker.
Confusion also arose over the swearing-in of nominated members of the House before the election of the Mayor. The members were worried that how could the nominated members be administered the oath first instead of the elected members. AAP has objected to the Lt Governor naming 10 nominated members without consulting their government before this meeting.
